Sport & Physical Education (PE)

Mr Lee leads the Sport Curriculum across the Federation.  We work in partnership with Highfields Secondary School, Matlock and compete alongside and against other primary schools in the Matlock cluster, often with much success!  We also hold regular inter-house competitions and use Lea Green Learning & Development Centre for termly outdoor pursuits. LEA ARE CURRENTLY THE MATLOCK CLUSTER LARGE SCHOOL CHAMPIONS 2022/23 AND WESSINGTON ARE THE SMALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONS!

All children in KS1 and KS2 are provided with 2 hours of curriculum PE time a week, forest schools, plus opportunities to engage in extra-curricular PE and sport. In addition to this, we encourage active playtimes and active lunchtimes to ensure every child is getting their recommended 60 minutes of activity per day.

All pupils in Years 3 and 4 attend weekly swimming lessons. All children meet the governments' minimum requirement for swimming ability by the end of Year 6, and almost all children are very confident swimmers. We have several pupils who swim for local clubs. We take part every year in the local schools' swimming gala with much success.

All year groups from Year 2 to Year 6 are given the opportunity to experience a residential visit encouraging outdoor education even further.  Our residential visits include Lea Green Learning & Development Centre, PGL, and Whitehall Centre.

We also employ many experts in the field (peripatetic sports coaches) to assist with our PE lessons - Derbyshire County Cricket Board, a county hockey coach, gymnastics coach and dance specialists.

Sport Premium Funding

Sports Premium Funding is a Government initiative that aims to enhance and improve the provision of PE and to increase the activity levels of children in primary schools. Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

Healthy Eating

We are all aware of the importance of healthy eating on life chances yet research shows that 80% of our kids are not eating enough vegetables. We have therefore teamed with the National Initiative - Veg Power. Veg Power is on a mission to inspire kids from early years through primary school and into their teens to veggie loving habits they will keep for life and in turn share with their children. We will be sharing ideas and motivating children in school to eat more vegetables, hopefully tasting and trying some too. The first activity is for them to 'show off' their favourite recipe, which must include vegetables, and enter it into our school competition. The children can present their recipe in any way they choose, either electronically or on paper. The winners will make their recipe in school for others to try. The closing date for this competition is: Friday 18th February. Veg Power has also sent some great ideas to share with parents about how to get your child's lunchbox more healthy - please click the link below to see some great ideas.
