Science in both schools is exciting, child-led and filled with fun investigations! In 2021 Mrs Williams and Miss Powell have organised our first ever Science weeks in both schools. We were successful in both British Science week Grant applications, and Lea School looked at Microbes which tied in well with Forest Schools and Microhabitats and Coronavirus, whilst at Wessington we studied sustainable energy and Climate Change. We had a number of guest speakers online in both schools over the week which helped to improve Science Capital and enabled children to talk to real scientists which will hopefully inspire them in the future. With our Grant money we purchased 10 microscopes and some solar panels. There was a real buzz around school during this week which everyone loved! Big plans are in place for next year’s Science Week already where we hope to involve the local community more – covid allowing.
Every class has a Science Ambassador who serves for a term, there is much competition for these positions. Children enjoy the opportunity to assist with setting up experiments, contributing to planning and assisting during the lessons.
Mrs Williams recently attended PSQM training which has been really useful in fine-tuning our lesson planning, and she and Miss Powell are always looking for exciting opportunities to give Science the highest profile possible in both schools.
We are also workingin partnership with the Science Faculty at Derby College. We will be welcoming some of their post 16 students to work with our children very soon!
