Vacancy - Playgroup Assistant


We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our friendly, dedicated and hardworking team as a Playgroup Assistant at Holloway Playgroup from September 2022.


Hours of work: 4 days per week (to be agreed) 8.30am – 4.00pm during school term time.

28 hours at the setting plus 3 hours per week planning and preparation (31 hours in total)


Rate of Pay: £9.50 per hour.


We provide childcare to children aged from 2 years to 4 years from the villages of Holloway, Lea, Lea Bridge, Dethick and the surrounding areas. We work in partnership with Framework Federation Schools.


Children are at the heart of everything we do. You will undertake all aspects of early years’ education and care supporting staff to plan and carry out all activities in order to create and develop a stimulating and safe environment for the children to develop their potential.


We are seeking either a level 3 qualified Assistant or someone unqualified who is willing to undertake training to achieve this level to assist our Playgroup Manager and Team.


You will fulfil legal and statutory requirements, contribute to and implement policies and procedures, and act as a key worker for a group of children and communicate/document progress on a regular basis with their parents.


We would like the jobholder to join us from September 2022. Main Duties


  • Under the direction of the Manager, to assist in the day to day running of the Playgroup, helping the children with planned activities, reading stories, singing songs and engaging in dialogue with them.
  • To safeguard and protect the children at all times maintaining a safe environment, providing equipment that is safe and promoting high standards of hygiene at all times.
  • To conduct Risk Assessments and follow COVID -19 procedures.
  • To play a Keyworker role, contributing towards meeting individual children's learning needs, within activity plans following the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • To organise the keeping of records which plan the next steps in their learning and play.
  • To provide a learning journey book for each key child to show their development whilst in the setting.
  • To ensure activities are conducted with due regard to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and the well-being of the children.
  • To attend staff planning sessions as required and undertake preparation work of activities as necessary.
  • To keep confidential any information regarding children, their families or other staff members which is learned as part of the job.
  • To be prepared to undertake further training as necessary or as determined by the Management Committee.
  • To accompany children on trips away from Playgroup Premises, when required.
  • To help make sure Playgroup is a happy, colourful and stimulating environment for the children.
  • To make sure Playgroup is kept tidy, putting away equipment and cleaning equipment where necessary.
  • To be aware of Data Protection GDPR and follow procedures.
  • To undertake any other tasks as allocated by the Manager/Deputies Leadership Team.




  • NVQ Level III in Childcare & Education or equivalent or be willing to undertake training to achieve this level.
  • Experience of working with young children.
  • First Aid Certificate or be willing to obtain same on appointment.
  • Knowledge of child observation, planning and recording
  • Detailed and up-to-date knowledge of child development, and be able to demonstrate an ability to relate this to his/her practice
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Experience of working with children with additional/ special needs
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development and early years’ education
